How Notes Are Named In This Course – The (h)

This Crucial Ear Training For 5 String Banjo Course covers more that one octave on the banjo. Therefore, during the course you’ll see the following symbol (h). This symbol denotes the higher octave for the named note.

For example, when you see D, that refers to the lowest D on the banjo, which is the open fourth string. However, when you see D(h), that refers to the next octave D, which beginning banjo pickers should play as the open first string.

Similarly, when you see G, that refers to the G note which is the open third string, but when you see G(h), that refers to the next octave up, which folks should play on the fifth string.

In this course, the following notes appear a different times in more than one octave: D or D(h), E or E(h), F or F(h), F# or F#(h), and G or G(h).
